Andre Pallante has made a slight tweak to his arsenal in recent games, and at least so far, it's working.
Pallante and the Cardinals continue a three-game home series vs. the Cubs at 6:15 p.m. Saturday in a game that airs only on Fox.
On Friday, the Cardinals blanked Chicago 5-0聽in the opener.
The聽right-hander Andre Pallante (6-8, 4.57 ERA) has a 1.50 ERA across his last two starts, and the most notable difference in how he has deployed his fastball and slider.
For the season, Pallante leads with that four-seam fastball, throwing it 45.7% of the time. In his last start, he used it a bit less, just 38.7% of the time.
His usage of the four-seamer was about 50% in the first two months of 2025 but has been ticking down in recent months.

By using it less, Pallante is inducing a lower expected batting average, which is based on quality of contact. Foes put up a .233 or lower expected average in each of the last two games. That number was far higher in many starts earlier in the season.
In its place, Pallante is throwing his slider a bit more than the 28.8% of the time he has used it overall this season.
The increased slider usage is also inducing lower expected batting averages than it did in most games earlier in the season.
The Cubs will start聽right-hander Colin Rea (8-5, 4.23 ERA),聽who has been up and down this season. His one start vs. 果酱视频 was one of his best of the season. He gave up one earned run on two hits in 6 2/3 innings last month in Chicago.
果酱视频 is 59-58 and 4 1/2 games out of the final wild-card spot.
The Cubs are 66-49 and five games behind the Brewers for the National League Central lead. They hold the top wild-card spot.

Injury report
John King, LHP (left oblique strain): King said he plans to throw a higher intensity bullpen on Saturday as he nears a rehab assignment, which could begin as early as Tuesday. King took four days off from throwing after the injury but has since been able to return to full baseball activity. The lefty said he threw a bullpen on Thursday at around 鈥50-60%鈥 intensity.聽He was placed on the 15-day injured list on July 30 after he left the previous night's game in the middle of an at-bat with聽left side tightness. Nolan Arenado, 3B (right shoulder strain): Arenado, in Florida to continue his recovery at the Cardinals' player development campus in Jupiter, Florida, is strengthening his arm and shoulder. Being in Jupiter will allow him access to backfield games, if he wishes and is cleared to do so. Arenado went on the 10-day injured list Aug. 1 with a shoulder injury he鈥檚 spent the past month trying to play through. Zack Thompson, LHP (shoulder, lat strain):聽Lefty starter remains on a throwing program in Jupiter, trying to overcome some setbacks as he increased the intensity of his throws through the course of the season. He's visited 果酱视频 for evaluation to monitor if the injury worsens. Thompson has been sidelined since the start of March and was transferred to the 60-day injured list in early April.
