ST. LOUIS — Police shot and killed a man Thursday afternoon as they were investigating a morning carjacking, police said.
The carjacking happened around 1:20 a.m. Thursday at the corner of Blair Avenue and Palm Street near Interstate 70, said Maj. Janice Bockstruck.
Later that day, police found the stolen vehicle, a Ford Fusion, about a half-mile away, at Salisbury and North 20th streets.
Around 1:20 p.m., as police were investigating there, a car pulled up full of people, Bockstruck said. One man got out and approached the stolen car.
But when police went to talk to him, he pulled out a gun and ran, she said.
Officers chased him behind a building there, ordered him to drop the gun, then shot him.
Bockstruck did not say how many officers chased the man, how many fired their weapons, whether the suspect fired his gun, or how many shots were fired.

The block at Salisbury and 20th was blocked with tape and police cars at every intersection.
Police searched grass in a neighboring lot with a dog. Police said they recovered a gun there.
The officer who fired the shots that killed the man had been on the force for nine years, Bockstruck said.
