BRENTWOOD 鈥 As work continues on a $95 million plan here to tame Deer Creek鈥檚 floods with trails and parks, at least one landowner will get a larger payday than expected:
A 果酱视频 County jury has ruled that Brentwood owes $1 million more than it first paid for land owned by TMD Property I LLC.
Brentwood Mayor David Dimmitt said the verdict won鈥檛 do anything to slow down the project.
鈥淲e鈥檙e moving, and we鈥檙e moving fast,鈥 Dimmitt said.
In 2019, voters in this suburb of 8,000 raised the sales tax by a half-percent for the project, in hopes of finally subduing the periodic flooding here, which regularly swamped Manchester Road during heavy rains, inundating basements and businesses. Officials envisioned a park that wound along the creek, with walking trails and playgrounds and plenty of space for floodwaters to spread out.
The city bought dozens of properties along Deer Creek. But it couldn鈥檛 agree to terms with some, including TMD, owner of an undeveloped six-acre property at 2740 Bompart Avenue, and moved to seize the land through eminent domain.
A judge ordered the city to pay TMD roughly $1.05 million. TMD鈥檚 lawyers disputed that amount, according to court documents. A jury valued the lot at $2.3 million, Dimmitt said.
Dimmitt said the project is still under budget and on track.
In recent weeks, crews have worked to dig retention basins 鈥 one of which will serve a double purpose as an amphitheater 鈥 and a lake to hold water during flash floods.
And the project has expanded. About $15 million in grants will fund a $5 million 鈥渄estination playground鈥 on 2.5 acres complete with swings, a climbing feature and zip lines, an event lawn with space for food trucks and a pavilion with restrooms powered by solar panels.
Dimmitt said officials are ordering pieces for the playground, and crews recently put a roof on the pavilion.
Workers will also continue to reduce the slope of the banks along Deer Creek and are now building a tunnel under Manchester Road to connect the new park to the Great Rivers Greenway regional trail system.
Flood work along Deer Creek should be complete by December. The playground is set for completion in May 2023, Dimmitt said.
鈥淚t鈥檚 hard to contain my excitement,鈥 he said.
An attorney for TMD could not be reached for comment.
