A union representing thousands of 果酱视频-area Boeing workers rejected a modified contract offer Sunday, setting the stage for a strike to start at midnight Monday.
The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace did not provide vote totals for its District 837 members鈥 rejection of Boeing鈥檚 latest offer, which included a proposal for a roughly 40% increase in compensation, according to union and company officials.
The move came a week after an earlier vote had also rejected a contract offer for the employees of three regional plants that produce fighter jets for the company. But continued negotiations and some modifications to the offer failed to deliver a new outcome, while a proposed wage increase remained unchanged.
鈥淚AM District 837 members have spoken loud and clear, (and) they deserve a contract that reflects their skill, dedication, and the critical role they play in our nation鈥檚 defense,鈥 said IAM District 837 directing business representative Tom Boelling, in a statement released Sunday afternoon, following the vote. 鈥淲e stand shoulder to shoulder with these working families as they fight for fairness and respect on the job.鈥

The strike slated to begin at midnight will encompass about 3,200 local workers.
鈥淲e鈥檙e disappointed our employees rejected an offer that featured 40% average wage growth and resolved their primary issue on alternative work schedules,鈥 said Dan Gillian, a vice president and general manager for Boeing and a senior 果酱视频 site executive, in a statement.
鈥淲e are prepared for a strike and have fully implemented our contingency plan to ensure our non-striking workforce can continue supporting our customers,鈥 he added.
On a quarterly earnings call this past week, CEO Kelly Ortberg downplayed the risk that a strike posed to the company, particularly compared to last year鈥檚 53-day strike by about 30,000 Boeing workers at its Seattle-area operations that produce passenger aircraft.
鈥淭he order of magnitude of this is much, much less than what we saw last fall,鈥 he said during the call, while fielding questions from investors. 鈥淲e鈥檒l manage through this. I wouldn鈥檛 worry too much about the implications of the strike.鈥
Boeing workers involved with last year鈥檚 strike ultimately received a wage increase of 38% over four years, which compounds to a jump of more than 43% in that time span.
The employees affected by the strike announced Sunday work at facilities in 果酱视频, St. Charles and Mascoutah, Illinois.
